For those who are interested in seeing where we are staying here in Germany, here are some pictures of our apartment.
Our apartment is located on the second floor of a house. After entering the front door, you go up these narrow stairs.
Upon entering the front door (second door to the left), you will be in the central hall.
The door right next to the entrance goes to the bathroom. The bathroom also has a very small washing machine in it. The toilette seat is decorated with tiny stones and sea shells encased in the plastic.
The next door down brings you to our kitchen, which is about the same size as the bathroom.
Our landlord left us the complimentary beer that is seen sitting our our table here. Germany is known for its beer, but since we don't drink alcoholic beverages, we will not be trying it.
If you look out the kitchen window, you will see the street in front of the house we are in.
Across from the kitchen is our living room. I can't say I am a fan of the artwork, but it is actually better than the decor we saw in some other apartments we looked at.
The weird painting on the wall in this next picture sort of creeps me out.
Here is the view looking out the back windows of our apartment:
The landlord has a little yard below us that mostly is laid with bricks. There are a couple flower/garden beds in it too.
Next to the living room and across from our front door is the master bedroom. Both the living room and bedroom have back doors that open, but they don't go anywhere. There is just a rail immediately outside the door. While this seems a bit strange to me, such doors and railings seem to be common in this area.
The last room at the end of the hall is Austin's bedroom. There are a couple steps down to it. It is actually located over this house's garage. It has slanted roofs with skylights on both sides. Luckily, there are shades that pull down over the skylights, which is particularly helpful during Austin's nap time. There is also a desk in this room and a number of shelves. Austin really wanted to be in these pictures, so he stood right in the middle of them and held really still for me.
Unfortunately, the lighting in the apartment is pretty dim overall. It is fine during the day when our curtains are pulled back, but lacking when the sun isn't out.
The landlord listed on our contract doesn't speak any English, and neither does her husband. Their daughter, who lives in the upstairs apartment above us, does though. So when we have questions or need something, we usually email her. However, her father is often the person who comes to the door to answer questions, bring us things, or otherwise help us. He talks a great deal, rambling on to us in German, but we only understand a small portion of it. We were hoping that we could type things into our computer on a translator as needed, and then show him the German translation. However, he actually has poor eyesight, so that doesn't work very well either. It makes things interesting sometimes, but our landlords have been very accomedating and helpful thus far, which has been really nice.
