Nate made me a much-more-involved-than-expected, but delicious mint cookies and cream cake for my birthday, plus he fixed a very nice salmon dinner. Yum!
We had a birthday party with my extended family at the same time we celebrated Easter. This party was for most of the April birthdays in the family.
Austin was thrilled with his gifts from family, including a very large dump truck and a Hot Wheels tracks.
We also celebrated Austin's birthday with just us. I made him some white chocolate and chocolate cupcakes.
And he was thrilled to get a new bicycle from us, along with a helmet. Unfortunately, the bike turned out to be too big even though according to the information for it, it should have fit Austin just fine. We had to exchange it the next day.
Austin got a couple other things from us too, like a journal and a funny rat bookmark. Austin likes anything that is funny, and he enjoys reading, so I thought this bookmark would be perfect to make him.
Yesterday we took Austin out to try his new bike. As expected, this proved to be a rather dramatic learning experience, but he did make some progress in learning how to pedal. He has been riding a balance bike for over a year, but he really hasn't used anything much with pedals before. Here is one of the videos of him being successful in his pedaling efforts:
We also let Austin have a birthday party with his friends this year on Saturday. Having so many parties and so much excitement has left him quite wound up nearly the whole month...it is been difficult to get him to focus on doing and finishing anything he is supposed to. But it has been fun to see him so happy and excited. He really enjoyed the party with his friends. Luckily, the weather cooperated. Since it had rained every day of the week before Saturday, we were feeling very fortunate to not have it rain on us for the party. We played some games, like moving M&Ms with a straw onto plates, trying to shake ping-pong balls out of tissue boxes strapped onto kids backs without using hands, balance the ping-pong ball on a spoon relay race, freeze tag, and a bean bag toss.
Additionally, we had face painting. While this is not something I would normally have had someone come do for my child's birthday party, at Utah Voice's Broadway Bingo Concert I happened to win an hour of face painting by Paula from Fairy Fun Faces. At first, none of the kids were interested in having their face painted. However, after finally convincing one person to get painted, most of the other kids followed suit, and some happily went back for more later after everyone else who wanted a turn had one.
There was also a round of gifts and some ice cream and cupcakes.
As fun as birthdays are, I think I am glad it will be a little while before I have to make more birthday cake or plan another party.
